How to use

  1. Enter the bed length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the mulch depth in inches (2-3" is typical).
  3. Read the cubic yards and number of bags you need.

About this calculator

This mulch calculator multiplies the bed area by the depth to get volume, then converts it to cubic yards (how bulk mulch is sold) and to standard 2-cubic-foot bags. A 2-3 inch layer is ideal for most beds: deep enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, but not so deep that it smothers roots. Bulk mulch by the cubic yard is far cheaper than bags once you need more than about 12-15 bags, so the bag count helps you decide whether to bag or go bulk.

🧮 How it's calculated

  1. 1Step 1 — Convert depth to feet: Depth (ft) = Depth (in) ÷ 12
  2. 2Step 2 — Volume in cubic feet: Volume (ft³) = Length × Width × Depth (ft)
  3. 3Step 3 — Convert to cubic yards: Cubic yards = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
  4. 4Step 4 — Count bags: Bags = ⌈Volume (ft³) ÷ 2⌉ (standard 2 ft³ bag)

Cubic yards = (Length ft x Width ft x Depth ft) / 27, where Depth ft = inches / 12.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?+

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes 13.5 bags of the standard 2-cubic-foot size to equal one cubic yard.

How deep should mulch be?+

2-3 inches is ideal for most garden beds. Too deep can suffocate roots and waste material.
